Thiis report aims to study the oyster Crwsosrrea gigas growth and production over a 12 years time' s span in the bay of Marennes-DIeron. Results of 12 years of oyster growlh did not show any significant oyster biological productivity decrease, nor trend. ln contrast, annual growth showed a large variability, which will be correlated with environmental conditions. Moreover, annual growth variability was greater than the variability due to site location,. besides the Ronce experimental site. The later, located in the south west part of the bay of Marennes-Dleron, has been the leading oyster growth site since 1989. The annual shell growlh variabiliry was greater than oyster dry meat weight fluctuation . Both 1990 and 1991 years were characterized by the...

Seasonal changes in carbohydrate metabolism and its relationship with summer mortality of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) in Marennes-Ole'ron bay (France) ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Faury, Nicole; Goulletquer, Philippe.
This paper investigates the biological responses of Crassostrea gigas under traditional culture conditions on a mudflat in Marennes-Oleron bay. Summer mortality has been regularly observed in recent years in oysters reared using "on bottom" culture conditions. The present study attempts to provide a better understanding of the mortality phenomenon through biological parameters. Classical 'field parameters' such as mortality and growth rates, and quality index (dry meat weight/ dry shell weight x 1000) were monitored. Additional parameters, as biochemical composition of oyster meat and glucose incorporation capacity, were included as potential new bioindicators. The work highlighted a critical timing (May-June) preceding the summer mortality and...

Seuil de production de pseudo-fécès de l'huître creuse du Pacifique : Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) dans des conditions de faibles charges particulaires ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Razet, Daniel.
This study is part of a comprehensive research program focusing on the oyster shellfish management in the Marennes-Oleron Bay: Within this program, a task aimed to develop a biological model of the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas. Our study addressed the issue of pseudo-faeces production threshold under various diet quality levels. Pseudo-faeces sampling was carried out using particulate matter concentration below Il mg 1-1 The various modalities prompted us to define two pseudo-faeces production models. The first model was developed using natural seawater. The organic matter ratio ranged from 25 to 45% while the pseudo-faeces production threshold reached 2.9 to 4.4 mg 1-1 of total particulate matter. The second model was established using seawater...

Shelled Molluscs ArchiMer
Berthou, Patrick; Poutiers, Jean-maurice; Goulletquer, Philippe; Dao, Jean-claude.
Shelled molluscs are comprised of bivalves and gastropods. They are settled mainly on the continental shelf as benthic and sedentary animals due to their heavy protective shell. They can stand a wide range of environmental conditions. They are found in the whole trophic chain and are particle feeders, herbivorous, carnivorous, and predators. Exploited mollusc species are numerous. The main groups of gastropods are the whelks, conchs, abalones, tops, and turbans; and those of bivalve species are oysters, mussels, scallops, and clams. They are mainly used for food, but also for ornamental purposes, in shellcraft industries and jewelery. Consumed species are produced by fisheries and aquaculture, the latter representing 75% of the total 11.4 millions metric...

Shellfish culture in France : present status and new approaches to optimise production ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe.
France is presently one of the leading countries in Europe for shellfish production with 152,000 metric tonnes of the Pacific cupped oyster C. gigas, 2,500 tonnes of flat oyster O. edulis, and more than 60,000 tonnes of mussels M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis. Moreover, species like the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in French Polynesia, and on the Atlantic coastline the scallop Pecten maximus and the Manila clam Tapes philippinarum contribute significantly to the overall landings. . Since traditional rearing areas are now almost overloaded, new management practices are currently under review to optimise and develop shellfish culture. Besides the products resulting from genetic research (e.g. triploids, tetraploids and disease resistant strains),...

Shellfish farming and coastal zone management (CZM) development in the Marennes-Oleron Bay and Charentais Sounds (Charente Maritime, France): A review of recent developments ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Le Moine, Olivier.
France is currently one of the leading shellfish production countries in Europe, harvesting more than 150,000 metric tons of the Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and 60,000 tons of mussels (Mytilus edulis and M. galloprocincialis) each year. Among rearing areas, the Charentais Sounds and the Marennes-Oleron Bay rank first in Europe, with an annual production of 40,000 and 15,000 tons of oysters and mussels respectively. More than a third of French production is marketed from the Marennes-Oleron area. As natural C. gigas and M. edulis spatfall is limited to the Atlantic coast, the Marennes-Oleron Bay and the Charentais Sounds play a critical role nationally, representing more than half of French oyster and mussel spat production. The stocking...

Suivi des espèces envahissantes marines à Saint Pierre et Miquelon. Année 2014 ArchiMer
Sellier, Marion; Poitevin, Pierre; Goraguer, Herle; Faure, Jean-marie; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Initiated in 2013, the present work carried out in 2014 extends the monitoring network focusing on marine invasive exotic species in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago. In a global context of coastal ecosystems’ changes, accentuated by direct or indirect effects of human activities, it became essential to implement a monitoring survey and to track the expansion of marine invasive species along Saint-Pierre and Miquelon shoreline. Fukui traps and tunicates collectors deployed on different stations as well as the timely completion of observational dives, have provided the following conclusions: several invasive species were again reported within the local marine ecosystem. Those species, i.e., Carcinus maenas, Caprella mutica, Ciona intestinalis,...

Goulletquer, Philippe; Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole.
A comprehensive research program has been developed since 1995 to focus on C. gigas abnormal mortality rates occurring regularly during the summer period in the Bay of Marennes Oleron (France). Several subprojects were carried out including in-vitro ecophysiological studies to asses l) the relationship between reproductive status, scope for growth and mortality, 2) effects of stress temperature on physiological functions. Meanwhile, field studies concerned monitoring surveys of calibrated oyster populations at various emersion time and geographic sites. A database was developed and incorporated into a geographic information system (GIS) to overlay several layers of information and establish relationship among environmental parameters and mortality rates....

The case for sequencing the Pacific oyster genome ArchiMer
Hedgecock, Dennis; Gaffney, Patrick M.; Goulletquer, Philippe; Guo, Ximing; Reece, Kimberly; Warr, Gregory.
An international community of biologists presents the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas as a candidate for genome sequencing. This oyster has global distribution and for the past several years the highest annual production of any freshwater or marine organism (4.2 million metric tons, worth $3.5 billion US). Economic and cultural importance of oysters motivates a great deal of biologic research, which provides a compelling rationale for sequencing an oyster genome. Strong rationales for sequencing the oyster genome also come from contrasts to other genomes: membership in the Lophotrochozoa, an understudied branch of the Eukaryotes and high fecundity, with concomitantly high DNA sequence polymorphism and a population biology that is more like plants than any...

The decline of Chesapeake Bay oyster population : a century of habitat destruction and overfishing ArchiMer
Rotschild, B. J.; Ault, J. S.; Goulletquer, Philippe; Jensen, W. P.; Heral, Maurice.
The oyster population in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay has declined b y more than 38-fold since the early part of the century. Although the effects of fishing have been implicated, the decline has been attributed primarily to water quality and recently oyster disease. The decline has also been thought to have affected the biota and chemistry of the Bay. Our analysis provides a quantitative demonstration that the long-term declines are largely the result of habitat loss related to over fishing early in the century, stock over fishing, early in the century' through the recent times. Furthermore, the major ecological effects on Chesapeake Bay occurred well-before World War 1/, before industrialization and the prevalence of disease

The French mussel industry : present status and perspectives ArchiMer
Prou, Jean; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The French mussel industry produces around 60,000 metric tons on a yearly basis using two common species: Mytilus edulis, which is widely distributed along the Atlantic coastline, and Mytilus galloprovincialis, distributed mainly on Mediterranean shores. This production represents only half of the yearly consumption of mussels in France, leading to large imports from Spain and the Netherlands. Most imports occur between September and March, when the Atlantic production is reduced because of low meat quality due to spawning events. Although a public mussel fishery still exists, most production is based upon 3 culture techniques: on-bottom culture, longline and suspended culture, and bouchot-type culture, with the latter being developed in the l3lh century....

The Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas : a species introduced in Europe for aquaculture in the 70's to become invasive in the late 90's ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas: from an introduced species for aquaculture to an invasive species for the ecosystem Miossec L. and Goulletquer Ph. The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas has been introduced worldwide for aquaculture purposes since the beginning of the last century. In most of the countries the species established broadly, emphasizing its ability to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. In Europe the Pacific oyster was massively introduced in the 1970s especially into France after mass mortalities of the Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata affected by a viral disease. Good environmental conditions in some French areas on the Atlantic coast induced successful recruitments in the following years. The population became...

The shell of Cardium edule, Cardium glaucum and Ruditapes philippinarum : organic content, composition and energy value, as determined by different methods ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Wolowicz, M.
Assessments of the quantity of organic matter in shells were made both by ignition at 475°C and by chemical extraction in O•1M trichloroacetic acid. The quantity of organic matter obtained by ignition at 475°C was over-estimated by 2 to 4•8 times, depending on the species studied (Ruditapes philippinarum, Cardium edule, Cardium glaucum). A technique of extraction by O•lM trichloroacetic acid, filtration on Whatman CFjC filter and weighing of remaining ashes after ignition (450°C) is proposed, Energy values of the shell organic matter varied from 17•00(±0•60) Jmg 1 to 24•0 (±2'87) Jmg 1 depending on the species and the geographic location. In the energy budget, these methods have made it possible to obtain an estimate of the energy mobilised in the...
